We look at client needs and goals to tailor the level of review and documentation – whether an informal consultation, a limited environmental compliance assessment, or an environmental compliance audit:
- An informal consultation provides clients with input on their current environmental program in addressing applicable regulations and may include suggestions for improvement.
- A limited environmental compliance assessment provides a more in-depth review of permits, plans, manuals, and site operations, including preparation of a document that identifies potential deficiencies. We often use this type of review in property or business acquisitions to inform the purchaser of future obligations.
- An environmental compliance audit is indicated when a client is looking to verify compliance with specific laws and regulations and, if noncompliance is discovered, intends to seek violation mitigation through the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency or the state. Conducted under the direction of an attorney, an environmental compliance audit is very systematic and includes regulatory review, facility process review, facility inspections, employee interviews, and management system review. It must be completed within a very short, specified timeframe to allow the audited entity to disclose any violations identified.
