In-Situ and Ex-Situ Remediation Services at Former Mine

Buzz over Mission Clay

Farallon Provides Combination of In-Situ and Ex-Situ Remediation Services for Former California Mining and Industrial Site for Residential Redevelopment.

Located in Niles Canyon, east of Fremont, California, the 80-acre site was historically used as a clay mine and brick manufacturing facility in the early to mid-1900s. Previous site investigations identified heavy-chain petroleum hydrocarbon impacts to site soil and groundwater due to leaking underground storage tanks and concrete vaults used to store crude oil. On-site soil and groundwater impacts were remediated through excavation and dewatering.

Farallon worked with multiple oversight agencies to characterize an off-site hydrocarbon plume that impacted an adjacent water body, designed in-situ groundwater remediation, and operated a pilot study of enhanced bioremediation of soils excavated during previous remediation activities.

Design elements included injection of chemical oxidizing agents and colloidal-activated carbon, installation of an interceptor trench backfilled with a permeable mixture of sand and proprietary adsorptive materials, and soil treatment with proprietary enzymes to enhance microbial metabolism.
