Mr. Long has 15 years of experience in the environmental consulting industry, specializing in industrial wastewater treatment plant operations, stormwater and industrial waste management, and SPCC and SWPPP compliance. In providing operations support for a major corporation in the transportation sector, Mr. Long oversees the operation and maintenance of the on-site wastewater treatment plant, conducts effluent sampling and provides documentation to demonstrate compliance with discharge permit requirements, and identifies opportunities to improve operation efficiency and ensure safe work practices. He also manages hazardous and nonhazardous wastes generated at industry sites, samples and characterizes wastes, generates waste profiles and arranges for proper disposal in conjunction with waste disposal companies, and maintains requisite records and documentation.
Stormwater experience includes implementing a range of operational and structural BMPs at various corporate sites, conducting a training program for stormwater management contractors, and contributing to efforts fulfilling Facility Response Plan annual training requirements. Mr. Long’s SPCC and SWPPP compliance work entails inspection and sampling at nine corporate sites between Tacoma and Everett, and resolution of issues identified.
Mr. Long also has experience in the construction and testing of scale hydraulic models. He has tested for efficient fluid-flow conditions for a variety of systems, including pumping stations, dam spillways, trash racks, fish by-pass systems, and sewage collection systems. Testing has included the use of Laser Doppler Velocimetry, Acoustic Doppler Ve1ocimetry, Nixon velocity probes, pitot tubes, manometers, rotometers, and point gauges. As part of his hydraulic testing work, he developed SOPs, computerized data collection and reporting, managed the associated database, and managed the laboratory's safety program. Mr. Long’s coursework and training has included mechanical engineering, and water and wastewater operations. Additional work experience involves the design and drafting of mechanical systems for diverse applications in support of systems operations. Mr. Long also has experience supervising asbestos-abatement projects.
Mr. Long enjoys cooking and food preservation, and gardens to support these activities. Other outdoor interests include hiking, camping, and rock hounding. Among Tom’s artistic pursuits are repoussé and jewelry making.
